Affiliate Disclosure
How this site earns money, what that means for you, and how it affects our recommendations.
Last updated: April 2026
The short version:
"As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases." This means that when you click a product link on this site and make a purchase on Amazon, I may receive a small commission. You pay exactly the same price you would have paid going directly to Amazon. The commission comes from Amazon's side, not yours. Our recommendations are made independently of commissions.
What is an affiliate link?
An affiliate link is a tracked URL that allows a retailer — in this case, Amazon — to know that a visitor came from this website. When you click an affiliate link and make a purchase on Amazon, the retailer pays a small commission to this site. This commission is a percentage of the sale price and comes entirely from Amazon's side.
Your purchase price does not change because you used an affiliate link. You pay exactly what you would have paid if you had navigated to Amazon directly. No surcharge, no hidden cost, no premium.
What affiliate links look like on this site
On Calm Without Screens, affiliate links are identified clearly and consistently in the following ways:
- A disclosure bar at the top of every category page that reads: "This page contains affiliate links. As an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases."
- A label reading "Affiliate link — we may earn a commission from qualifying purchases" below every product call-to-action button.
- The statement "As an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases" in the footer of every page on the site.
If you see a "View on Amazon" button on this site, you can assume the link is an affiliate link. We don't hide this.
Amazon Associates programme
Calm Without Screens is a participant in the Amazon Associates Programme, an affiliate advertising programme designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.
As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases. This is the standard Amazon Associates disclosure required by the programme and by FTC guidelines.
How we make our recommendations
Our recommendations are made independently of the commission structure. The fact that a product has a higher commission rate does not influence whether we recommend it, how prominently we feature it, or what we say about it.
Our process:
- We research products we believe genuinely support the goal of calmer, more screen-free evenings.
- We read real customer reviews — including negative ones — and reflect honest drawbacks in the "Consider before buying" section of every product block.
- We only list products we would recommend to someone we care about, regardless of commission potential.
- We do not accept payment from brands or manufacturers to feature their products. Our editorial decisions are not for sale.
Why affiliate links are used
This website is run independently, without corporate backing, advertising banners, or paid sponsorships. Affiliate commissions help cover the cost of hosting, writing, researching, and maintaining the site — and allow all the content to remain free to read.
If you find this site useful and want to support it, using an affiliate link when you buy something you were going to buy anyway is the most straightforward way to do that. Thank you.
How we try to be helpful despite having a financial interest
We're aware that affiliate commissions create a potential conflict of interest. A site that earns from product recommendations has a financial reason to recommend products. We try to navigate this in the following ways:
- We are transparent about every affiliate link, every time, on every page.
- We include honest drawbacks — the "Consider" section of every product block — rather than only surfacing positives.
- We do not use manufactured urgency ("limited time offer"), fake scarcity, or manipulative framing.
- We do not inflate product descriptions with unverifiable claims.
- We make no medical or wellness claims about any product on this site.
We know that trust is earned, not declared. If you ever feel that a recommendation doesn't live up to our stated standards, we genuinely want to know.
FTC compliance
This disclosure is made in accordance with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission's guidelines on endorsements and testimonials in advertising (16 CFR Part 255), as well as similar regulations applicable in the EU and UK. Affiliate relationships are disclosed clearly and prominently throughout the site — not buried in a footer alone — as required by these guidelines.
Questions about specific recommendations
If you have a question about whether a specific recommendation is affiliated, why we recommend a particular product, or whether we have any direct relationship with a brand, you are welcome to contact us. We will always answer honestly.
